Time_part 2: You didn’t ask for my two cents but here they are anyway

January 21st, 2021

That expression comes from the original “my two pennies worth” and it was used as a humble way to provide an opinion. It has recently been “shortened” to “my two cents on that” (which by the by is a clear gain in time, just say it out loud and count the time…you’ll see…I’m joking, it takes just about the same amount of time, but if you did say it out loud it means you are “engaged” with the article and I’m a happy not writer). In this article, “my two cents on that” are not only an expression but an actual verifiable fact, I’ll proceed to explain: Wait! Before that, a small interruption. The smart reader will say “If this is a part 2 there must exist a part 1 to draw a beginning from” — you are absolutely correct you beautiful and intelingent human being! You can find it here. I am not trying to ram the first article down your throat but we do live from the views the readers produce. This article is meant to be an analysis on my writing experience and on time, my actual time spent writing that first piece and how it ties together with what I sold you as a “time consultant”. Let’s say for the sake of argument that there was no study, no preparation and no tips and tricks article reading on Medium before I wrote my first article. Let’s just assume I went balls out and simply sat down and wrote the entire article off the top of my head. First of all it was a fantastic first experience, writing came easily and there is always someone with little or nothing to do that is in the mood to read some ramblings from strangers on the internet, thank you very much kind unoccupied people who took the time to read it. I am not calling my potencial readers lazy…I’m just pointing out that one’s laziness values someone else’s time, just as stated in the previous article with the example between having or not a maid — (#mediuminsightgold) I started by registering with the Medium Partnership Program (MPP) in order to get payed huge wads of cash for my writing prowess. I’m trully sorry I generaly do not move for the art, I do it for the money…the truck loads of money. I then proceeded to choose a topic to ramble about and when I found it I just typed typed typed like there was no tomorrow. It took about 10 hours to produce an article of 5 minutes of reading time…that time conversion ratio between all that you write and what gets presented is somewhat dismal. Perhaps later on, someone might leave in the comment section an idea of a normal ratio, mine is like 1:120! I actually needed 120 minutes of organising my thoughts to produce one minute of article, as stated before…dismal! Following the writing part of the article there is that cheap pandering of said article, I went to facebook where I have the astronomical number of 300 friends, then onto LinkedIn where I boast about the 30.000 connections which is the maximum that they allow, and then on to my wife…who I simply exasperated with my constant bitching (can I write this here? Is there a censorship for bad language?) about how I produced something so sublime she had to sit down and watch. As if she wasn’t aware that I made two exquisite kids. News Flash: It has been 20 days since the article, I don’t believe she has read it yet, but she did give the 50 claps..hooray! That’s marriage right there for you people, you don’t care anymore, you just put 50 claps so you don’t have to hear your husband speak. (If she reads this article this remark will not go unpunished…let’s wait and see) After the “social media circus” I went directly to my groups in whatsapp or to some friends I thought might benefit or at least give the claps with no questions asked…I know it’s cheap but it is what it is. So after the whole publicity stunt and spreading the message and whatnot I just waited to see how it would all pan out. I must tell you this was not a cool process, I read my article everyday just to make sure there were no mistakes…and of course, there are. Recognise, Accept and Overcome. Last August 1st an email came from Medium informing me that under the MPP I was awarded…hold your breath people…US$2,80!!! (Since I am european it translates roughly to €2,41) Boy did I feel like the love child between Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg with a splice of Jeff Bezos for good measure. After this I started my usual math concerning TIME and the reason why we are here in this particular article, up until now its all jibberish (creative jibberish though) but we are coming to our pearl of a conclusion. For the whole of 10 hours work I got payed €2,41, that means an hour of my time, when employed in writing for Medium is worth 0,24€. This is downright embarassing, especially considering I charge €80/hour of consultancy, so why take the time? Let´s call it an investment, while my hour of consultancy is sold and used an article will live on, you can revisit its content, also it’ll keep earning € throughout time, so it is now a source of passive income, I don’t have to work anymore on that particular article for it to generate something. On the other hand it is actually payed publicity, but I’m the one who is getting payed to publicize, perhaps you’ll take some insight and want to contact me and know more about how my company works. Of course, everytime I write a new article and link you to the one before I’m adding a reference and a potencial view, so the better my future content becomes, the more my previous articles will generate, again without taking any amount of time spent. What is to be viewed in here is that your time well employed may continue to value and bring you a revenue. In the case of companies is a satisfied customer that returns or brings new customers in…so time well spent originates more time spending oportunities that generate €. Also a consideration about passive income, your time will not strech, grow, rewind, it’ll keep going forward but what was created keeps returning some sort of income…so time well spent once is valuable in its own right. Finally the more time you employ doing something the better you’ll be at it (the ol’ 10.000 hour rule) but it’ll also give you a perspective of where you started and this tends to value your path, the choices you made, the manner in which you decided to spend your time, and it is always good to remember what made you who you are. In this case, if my first article is to reach the same money generating power as my consultancy we will have to wait until such time as Medium informs me they are sending a wire transfer for €800 but it’s ok… we have time.
